Join Paul Chaat Smith, Curator at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), as he presents a program titled Learning to Crawl: Brilliant Mistakes, Broken Dreams and Secret Reinventions at the National Museum of the American Indian, a discussion of evolution of NMAI’s approach to history. Smith will discuss the development of the museum's permanent exhibition and the challenges of representing American Indian history and culture in a single museum.
The Museum’s Lunch & Learn Series features quarterly programs on Holocaust history and human rights topics in an informal setting to encourage questions and discussion. Space is limited! Please register for one ticket per device used. This program is recommended for high school students and adults.
About Paul Chaat Smith
Paul Chaat Smith is a Comanche author, essayist, and curator. His books and exhibitions focus on the contemporary landscape of American Indian politics and culture. Smith joined the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in 2001, where he currently serves as Curator. His projects include the NMAI’s history gallery, performance artist James Luna’s Emendatio at the 2005 Venice Biennial, Fritz Scholder: Indian/Not Indian (2008), and Brian Jungen: Strange Comfort (2009). With Robert Warrior, he is the author of Like a Hurricane: the Indian Movement from Alcatraz to Wounded Knee, a standard text in Native studies and American history courses. His second book, Everything You Know about Indians Is Wrong, was published in 2009.
