"Post" Apartheid South Africa: The Edifice Remains

TIME: 1 PM EST | PLATFORM: Zoom | REGISTER: bit.ly/edificeremains

Apartheid South Africa was characterised by the overt exercise of white supremacy. The Soweto Youth Uprising of June 16, 1976, in which the country’s youth took to the streets to protest against this, fueled by the tenets of black consciousness, would mark a turning point in the resistance to apartheid, leading to its fall in 1994. Join TWR Youth Action Fellow Wandile Nzuza, as he asks whether the hopes and dreams of the June 16 moment have been realised in post-1994 South Africa. Together with panelists Mduduzi Ntuli (Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre), Kayla Trümpelmann (University of Pretoria), Kyle Cloete (University of Pretoria) and David Estrin (Together We Remember) they will discuss the way forward, turning this moment of collective memory into one of collective action.
