Ohio Remembers is a joint initiative of Heidelberg University and Together We Remember to empower students, educators, and community leaders across the Buckeye State to be effective human rights advocates and stewards of collective memory.
Through interactive virtual programming offered from January to May 2021, participants will gain the knowledge, skills, and relationships they need to foster social resilience in a time of acute social conflict. They will learn to apply the lessons of the past to the present to counter antisemitism, racism, xenophobia, and other forms of violent hatred in their schools, communities, and on social media.
Together, we will remember humanity at its worst and demonstrate what Ohioans can be at their best so that “never again” may become a reality, once and for all.
Our Story: A legacy to Remember
Ohio Remembers is inspired by the life and experiences of the late Don Behm, Heidelberg class of ‘51, a U.S. Army veteran, and the late Jimmy Lichtman, a survivor of the Holocaust. Both men witnessed the horrors of genocide first-hand during World War II.
In 2010, sixty five years after their paths first crossed, they reconnected at Heidelberg University, where they shared their poignant stories as liberator and survivor. An overwhelming response prompted the University to bring them back in 2011, at which point, the annual Lichtman Behm Genocide Lecture Series was born. As a result, over the past decade, thousands of middle school, high school, and university students have learned about different genocides in history through the stories of survivors, their descendants, and activists working to prevent history from repeating itself.
Channeling the resilient spirits of Don and Jimmy, we refused to let the pandemic stop us from hosting this year’s lecture series, and thanks to technology, we can reach as many students in several months as we have reached in a decade, including Heidelberg alums and people of conscience across the world.
