Black Experiences in New Jersey: Using Public History in the Classroom:

TIME: 12:30 PM ET I PLATFORM: Zoom | REGISTER: bit.ly/2QVnnf2

Did you know that New Jersey was the first northern state to forbid voting on the basis of race and the last northern state to abolish slavery? While New Jersey is the 4th most diverse state, its school districts are some of the most segregated in the country.

Join Chhange and the Sankofa Collaborative for a virtual Professional Development workshop on the experiences of Black people in New Jersey. Harnessing public history resources, this workshop will address:

  • The History of Slavery in New Jersey

  • The Great Migration & Segregation

  • The Newark Rebellion

Sessions will include best practices for incorporating oral history, archival materials, and historic photos and objects into your lessons. The workshop will also include resources for teaching these important topics in your in-person, hybrid, and virtual classrooms.

5 Hours of Professional Development Provided

Registration is required to receive Zoom access and session recordings
